Everyone is talking about Jon and Kate. Even cafeteria ladies are talking about Jon and Kate - well that wouldn't be a huge surprise considering that the show's target audience is cafeteria ladies. Ten million people watched the season 5 premiere of "Jon and Kate Plus 8" on monday, and I'm pretty sure that's everyone. All ten million of us were there, watching as Jon and Kate dissolved their marriage right in front of everyone, on a metaphorical stage of grocery store check out magazines. It was sad, very sad. So to all ten million people, I say: "we've created a monster!"
Unlike SOME people, I wasn't watching because I enjoy the misery of others. I've proudly been a fan of the show since the beginning. And I've watched as 'Jon & Kate Plus 8' slowly went from being an innocent little show to kill a lazy sunday afternoon, into a documentary about how to end up divorced and miserable. At first Jon's barely hidden contempt for Kate's craziness and the overwhelming responsibility of having eight kids was cute and entertaining, but I never imagined it would end up like this... never like this:
That was obviously too much :'( ~*sadness*~ :'( to even watch, and it's all dishearteningly real. Usually on these reality shows it's back to reality as soon as the cameras are off, but this is really it for Jon and Kate, this is their life. Welcome to reality hell, population: Jon & Kate plus 10 million anonymous viewers sitting at home on their sofa eating rice cakes.
With this, a line has definitely been drawn between reality show and voyeur porn. And if the show wasn't reality genre, but instead a scripted drama, it would have been Shakesperian. This episode was really the story of how a bouncy birthday party for eight of the most adorable octuplets could be so miserable if you were to just scratch the surface, but still revealing some very important life lessons along the way.
So for when "Trivial Pursuit the 2000's Edition" comes out and you have to "Name the TLC reality show (voyeur porno) that famously depicted the dismantling marriage of the parents of octuplets?", please don't hesitate.
